This is one of the few games that not only doesn’t make you feel guilty about being evil, but makes you delight in it. If you’ve played Overlord 1 you know the story, basically you’re an evil overlord, similar to Sauron from Lord of Rings (at least in appearance) who has a bunch of miniature, mischievous minions at his disposal, who delight in all things evil and do whatever you command giddy with excitement.

It becomes quite clear right from the Get go that Damnation borrows a lot of aspects from other games, perhaps most blatantly Uncharted. I’d like to say that this is an original take on the whole Zombie theme, however as a Zombie fan I’m well aware that George Romero’s Island of the dead has been reportedly under production for some time now. Nevertheless this is perhaps one of the most fun and innovative Zombie games since Left 4 Dead and conveniently also borrows a lot of concepts from it.

FPS games have to not only be extremely good, but introduce new elements to the table in order to get noticed in a market that’s already severely oversaturated. NHL 2010, the latest hockey game from EA sports reaffirms EA as the king of hockey games on the PS3 and every other platform. The basic mechanics of the game are still essentially the same, in fact when I started playing I almost forgot that I was playing NHL 2010, it felt as if I was playing NHL 2009....just to give you an idea of how similar the gameplay is. EA evidently stuck with the same engine they went with last year, so there’s no drastic changes to the gamplay. Improvements have however been made to certain aspects of the game, the first thing I noticed that they changed which immediately hit me was the passing mechanics.

Castlevania was once a classic franchise, it had a seat right beside Metroid and Halo, unfortunately unlike Metroid, Castelvania never could quite make the successful transition to the 3D world, not in the PS1 era, not in the PS2 era, sure it’s been attempted, but every attempt has led to results ranging from mediocre to an utter catastrophe. So three console generations later, now in the PS3 era Castlevania is attempting to take another wack at it. I have to say as a personal fan of the Castlevania saga I was very excited to play this game and had high hopes going into it.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a first-person shooter developed by Infinity Ward. This is the first Call of Duty game to not take place during world War 2 or World War I. Obviously with the franchises change of direction, a variety of new modern weapons, vehicles, character models and technologies are featured for the first time in the Call of Duty franchise. Some examples include a grenade Launcher, Target Pointer, the portable anti-tank guided missile and many more. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare introduces a number of new game play styles to the single player campaign as well as a variety of cameo-style missions where you play as different kinds of soldiers such as a Gunship gunner or as part of a Sniping Team behind enemy lines in a flashback-style mission.

Borderlands is a science fiction based first-person shooter with RPG elements, developed by Gearbox Software. The first thing that came to mind upon starting this game was Fallout 3, but only because they both take place on a post-apocalyptic planet. But after playing the game a lot more it became clear that this was a completely different game. The game does manage to confidently combine the FPS and RPG genres to create an interesting experience. You can play as four unique characters, a soldier, a super strong berserker, a sniper, and a siren. The game has a very MMORPG feel and puts the player in an open environment, much like Marrowind or World Of Warcraft.

Burnout paradise, the sequel to Burnout Legacy remains one of the fastest most engaging racing games to date. It feels like I’m racing pods not cars, that’s how fast this game is. The crashes are just incredible, if you watch Nascar as kid only in the faint hope that you might witness a crash your dream has come true. The game delivers the same fast paced racing game and smashing other car events that that made the franchise what it is, though the free roaming world of Paradise adds a new element to the game, now you have to analyze not distinct and separate linear maps, but one larger map in which the circuits are made.

I have to start by saying I am a huge metal head fan, and I really wanted this game to live up to the hype that I must confess, bought into. Unfortunately, the game just wasn`t good enough to make me feel like it was worth my time. The game is only a meagre six hours long, if you overlook the sub missions, which aren`t necessary to beat the game and there for don’t really add value to it after you’ve beat it, so not worth factoring into the equation. For those of you who are not familiar with the Brutal Legends game, you play as the character Eddie Riggs, who is a metal head, with long hair the leather jacket, the whole sha bang, he is a very cool character voiced by rocker Jack Black from the Tenacious D, perhaps better known for playing the teacher in school of Rock.

Battlefield bad Company is no doubt one of the best military shooters out there, thanks to its powerful single-player campaign, distinguish multiplayer action and new level of realism with regards to what can be destroyed and what can’t. Still utilizing the frostbite engine Dice has managed to create a warzone that is affected by the players actions, in other words if you shoot a rocket at a wall, it will blow up and you can even proceed through it. The mechanic however is far from perfect, not all buildings can be completely destroyed. Nevertheless Bad Company has certainly raised the bar and set a new standard for future FPS games.

Bioshock 2 was accompanied by a crap load of hype and justifiably so, after all this was the great follow up to the revolutionary Bioshock. Bioshock 2 absolutely kills it. Perhaps the hardest part about this review will be figuring out exactly what it is I liked most about this game. What always gripped me with the Bioshock series was the subtle creepiness that accompanied it, it kind of reminds of the movie the shining, nothing really happens in the movie that`s particularly scary (until the end) but the desolate atmosphere and feeling of isolation creates a tone that puts you on the edge of your seat.

Gears of War, the sequel to its critically acclaimed predecessor which sparked the birth of a franchise ultimately sticks to the formula that made it what it is, understandably. As with the original Gears of War, the graphics and environments are stunning, the cinematic feel of game and incredible game play mechanics which catapulted the original to the status of games like Mario and Halo continue to be a staple of the Gears of war series. Who doesn’t love the Resident Evil Franchise? I can recall almost 15 years ago when Capcom almost single handily re-invented the survival horror franchise for the video game world with their debut Resident Evil. This, to me and certainly to many others was the first truly scary video game. Successive additions to the game continued to build upon the anomalous gem that was the classic Resident Evil, both Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 proved to be worthy additions to the original.

“The best Zombie game out there period.” Left 4 Dead 2.....arrived a little quicker than I expected, heck I was still trying to get through the first Left 4 Dead when this sequel arrived. For a company like Valve this kind of quick release is entirely unexpected. Valve is like the kid in class who’s typically always late with his homework, but when they finally do submit their work its pretty good, only they get 30% deducted because it was a week late. Valve is noted for its tentatively announced release dates perhaps most memorably, Team Fortress 2, and current pending status of Half Life 2 Episode 3.

Normally I would start with a little bit of a build up, you know, a little bit of an introduction to try and squash any lingering bias I might have, but with this game I just can’t do that......Half Life 2 is a masterpiece, one of the best games I’ve ever played and truly something I wish I could freshly experience twice, this is in my opinion the pinnacle of FPS/Sci-fi singly playergames. There was a lot of uncertainty and apprehension concerning Half Life 2 prior to its release, after all this wasn’t a sequel to just any game, this was the sequel to the 1998 game of the year, which people of the era later dubbed the best game ever made.

Mortal Combat was at one point the pinnacle of fighting games, characterized by its unapologetic over the top violence and perhaps more than anything else, the voice acting. It is a franchise whose original 3 games for Super NES have already permanently etched itself into the fabric of video game and western culture, sparking two films and more recently a television show. What gamer isn’t familiar with the commanding voice of Scorpion when he utters “Come here” as he pulls his enemy into him with what appear to be snakes coming from his hands, followed swiftly by an uppercut that sends his opponent flying into the ceiling.

Dead space 2 is the sequel to the latest newcomer to the survival horror franchise running a lot of parallels with the classic Doom franchise, by combining the already mysterious element of space with dark hellish creatures, blood and gore. In this game you play as Isaac Clarke, a space engineer. Dead Space ingenious blends the survival/horror elements of Resident Evil action with the isolated and claustrophobic atmosphere of deep space. Dead Space 2 felt very familiar to the original, it merely made some minor improvements and changes to the game design, but nothing that really hits you in the face.

O god, where do I begin. I had the misfortune of having to play this game for a lot longer than I otherwise normally would have. This is probably the worst game I’ve ever play period, save for maybe Superman for the N64. It’s a boring and failed attempt at a rip off that tries to compensate for itself with an excessive amount of vulgar, and just tasteless, out of place language. The only thing good about this game is the close quarter executions which looks somewhat cool I will admit, but nothing you can`t get better from Gears of Wars 2.

At last, Batman, one of the most popular DC anti-heroes has a worthy video game Adaptation, the Arkham Asylum by Rocksteady. Let me start by saying this is to me the first Batman game that really gets it right, at least for most part, it stays true to the Batman animated series of the early 90’s and really provides an immersive story driven single player experience. Suffice to say it`s been a long time coming. This game as I said feels complete. Everything you’ve ever seen Batman in the television shows can be done in this game. Batman has detective vision mode that allows you to see where enemies are, the walls and environments are affected by your actions, and yes, Batman’s utility belt, which allows you to fly around like Spiderman is also in this game.

Army of two from EA is another arguably unnecessary addition to the third person duck and cover shoot-em ups. To be honest, it would be easy for me to dismiss this game as nothing more than a Gears of War knock off, in fact my first impressions of this game upon looking at the box were that this game was exactly that. However merely taking influence from an already existing game is not enough to constitute a game a knock off especially if it introduces new elements and mechanics to the initial concept. I was surprised to discover that not only was Army of two actually very engaging and fun, but with this game it has also featured a number of new significant innovations within this game, to the Gears of War styled combat games which really helped make the playing experience feel worth my while.
