Family Feud - Review

Family Feud is a game show that’s always been on the fringes of mass appeal. The game itself is quite fun, and enjoyable to watch and play along to, which is important in a game show (and important in a game based on that game show). The show often gets too bogged down with pointless chatter between the host and the contestants though, which is something this version thankfully avoids.
What are we feuding over?

Family Feud takes place between two families of players, who are given questions in which random people were polled. Their job is to guess what the most popular answers were from those people polled. This makes the game fun and slightly different from the norm, as there is no real correct or best answer. Rather, you must put yourself in the shoes of the average Joe, and guess at what answer the mainstream public was most likely to give.

There are 3 to 7 answers per round, and the family that won the right to play that question must uncover all of the answer before getting 3 strikes to win and collect the points for that round, otherwise their opponents have a chance to steal by guessing just one of the remaining answers.

My favorite part of the show and game though comes in the bonus round, where you’re blitzed with 5 questions in quick succession and must come up with the one answer you thing landed the most responses. It’s a fast and furious segment that forces you to think quickly.

What about the dreaded repeat questions?

The game does come with a wide variety of categories, so it should be some time before you start running into repeat categories. The game offers a nice difficulty progression, as you initially face off against families that aren’t bright enough to light a closet, but eventually advance to face stiff competition that will often take advantage of any opening you give them. You have the option to speed through the computer’s turns, which is a nice bonus and keeps the game humming along.

There’s also a nice little function available when typing out your answers, which is similar to a search engine in that it will start giving you suggestions based on what you’ve typed out so far. This is perfect for speeding up the process of filling out answers, or for actually giving you suggestions and maybe spurring the mental gears into motion when you’re otherwise totally stumped.

Family Feud is lacking a WiFi option, but there is multiplayer available if you get tired of playing against the computer. It’s a great way to make yourself look like a genius when you come across a repeat category while playing a friend. Just don’t make it too obvious.
