Reckless Getaway - Review
Is it racing or vehicular combat?
You’ve just robbed a bank, and you’re the getaway driver (hence the name of the game, it was either robbing a bank or fleeing from an angry girlfriend, and the latter would be too painful for most guys, so bank heist it is). Reckless Getaway isn’t solely a racing game, but rather more like a Burnout clone, in that you’re equally trying to drive fast and cause as much mayhem with your four-wheeled rocket as possible.
You get points for smashing into other vehicles, collecting objects and powerups on the course, getting big air off massive jumps, and generally driving as recklessly as possible. There’s only one speed: fast. In fact there isn’t even a gas or brake function in the game. The accelerating is done for you, all you have to do is steer your way through the crowds of vehicles (otherwise known as fodder in your path).
Like other racing games, much of the challenge comes from learning the nuances of each track, and mastering it, so you can make that perfect run through, weaving through traffic and collecting every coin like…well like you know what’s coming (which you do…if you master it).
Is this a bank heist or The Simpsons?
Personally I’m not a huge fan of the cartoony graphical style of the game. Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with it for most game types, but for racing games I prefer a more realistic graphical presentation that really makes me feel like I’m in the driver’s seat, which just isn’t accomplished when it looks like I’m driving through a Saturday morning cartoon world.
Graphical style aside, the graphics themselves are actually quite nice, and very pleasant to look at. The colors are bright and cheerful without being too over the top, and the animations and mayhem are all delivered with pleasing flair. The presentation is very nice, and works well even if it’s not to my personal tastes for this genre.
How many cars can I bust out?
One. Yes, just one car is available at present, which highlights the game’s biggest need. More cars with great new looks, controls, and features, would really add an incredible amount of replay value to the game. Hopefully this will be taken care of in future updates.
So far this is a great little racing game, and there’s the possibility of yet more updates and additions in the future, so don’t hesitate to check it out.
Platform – iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad (iOS 3.0 or later).
Genre – Racing
Price - $2.99
RATING – 4.8/5
