F.E.A.R 3 Review

F.E.A.R is the game that perhaps most effectively blended the survivor horror genre with FPS gameplay, sadly this time around they unveiled the source of all its creepy tension and thus dismantled that perfect blend of gripping FPS action and survivor/horror which defined it, perhaps unwittingly, still this is a good game......
Even though the game is no longer as scary or as creepy as it was in its last two outings, it is still a very solid claustrophobic corridor shooter that has improved upon the graphics from last time around.  As I said unfortunately there is nothing left to learn in F.E.A.R 3 as it pertains to the story, everything culminates in this third instalment, so a lot of the tension which was a huge part of the previous F.E.A.R game has been lifted, does it do the game justice?

The game has become rather linear and very predictable, there are very few surprises or scares which were a staple of the Franchise, but at the same time it is the third instalment of the game so the story was going to have unravel some how.

F.E.A.R 3, all you horror fans out there who were more a fan of F.E.A.R because of its eerie and elusive story line might be disappointed this time around.  But as a straight FPS game F.E.A.R 3 still manages to be very enjoyable and very engaging even more so when played cooperatively with a friend.  You begin the game as Pointman after you’re broken out of jail by your brother Fetal at which point you essentially begin your assault, once you complete a level with Pointman you can than play as Fetal who instead of using guns has special powers, he can raise enemies in the air, possess soldiers and use them against other soldiers, and even shoot projectiles at them.

Like the previous two F.E.A.R games the AI remains one of the most intelligent and most believable out there, enemies will try to flank you at every opportunity, will kick over tables and use them for cover, a lot of those stand out mechanics that were a staple of the first F.E.A.R games remain intact in this latest version of F.E.A.R.  I did however notice once occasional glitch where a soldier would get stuck when walking up the stairs but not enough to take away from the overall experience of the game.

The firefights in this game remain engaging, the enemies are vicious and numerous, this game is really great at maintaining the tension and keeping the player immersed in the action of the game.  As with previous F.E.A.R games you can still slow down the action to witness things in slow motion and get in few head shots while watch your opponents head go flying.  Amidst all the intense action, F.E.A.R 3 still has those brief atmospheric breaks between firefights where the tension seizes, the music stops and you can get a few minutes to breathe, these little breaks don’t last very long though before another wave of enemies come charging in at you, it’s ok you’ll know when the breaks over because the music with start up again.

What’s unique about F.E.A.R is most of the stand offs take place is tightly enclosed areas that really force you to use cover, which by the way is destructible this time around, everything you use for cover in F.E.A.R can be destroyed enemy player, this new mechanics is really effective at producing a feeling of urgency, when your cover breaks, it forces you to run to next object as quickly as possible to get out of the line of fire, which is really quite a rush.

The guns feel very realistic when you fire them, there’s no breaks in framerate and the controls in this game are smoother than ever, they are very responsive and help make the gameplay very enjoyable, also the melee attacks are awesome and make close quarter combat more interesting.  While F.E.A.R 3 has seemingly shed its skin from its last two outings, it’s still a well put together action game.

Rating: 85%
Pros:
The game is still very fun
The AI and game mechanics are still very well done
Multi-player is much better this time around
Cons:
It’s no longer as scary or creepy as its predecessors; it’s just an action game now.
