Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 - App Review
How close is it to the real deal?
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 has changed a few things for its iPhone release, the most notable of which is the graphics. Gone are the digitized live action animations, replaced by colorful 3-D models.
Some fans will dislike the change, but I thought it was a nice change of pace, and a look that is more consistent with iPhone games.
What was disappointing was the exclusion of a few characters. Other than that, most of the fatalities, babalities, characters, and bosses have made the transition to the iPhone. The sound is also top notch, with move that sizzle, crackle, and thud upon impact, and character voices that are reminiscent of the originals (“get over here!”).
Can I really pull off combos with a touch screen?
Let’s be clear on one thing; if there’s one genre that has a difficult time making the transition to the iPhone, it’s fighting games. The precision needed to control the movements and advanced moves of your fighter is very difficult to pull off with a virtual gamepad, there’s just no way around it.
It will take a lot of practice to master the controls to the point where they feel second nature like they would with gamepad in hand.
This can make the game difficult while going through arcade mode, even on easier difficulties. Some bosses that could normally be countered become extremely challenging.
You’re almost forced to spam a few easy to pull off moves (a favorite tactic of some players anyways) to pull victory from the clutches of horrendous defeat.
A much more enjoyable time is playing local multiplayer with other gamers. The fights are much more balanced, and you have a chance to try pulling off your best moves to really humiliate your opponent.
There are two additional modes, Survival, and Shao Carnage, which are nice additions but nothing groundbreaking. Shao Carnage at least gives you a stiff challenge and a chance to hone your skills.
Without a gamepad, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 presents additional challenges that aren’t present in other versions. This may scare off some gamers, but only wimps shy away from a challenge.
If you think you have what it takes, the ultimate mobile fighting experience awaits. Finish him!
Platform – iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad (iOS 3.0 or later).
Genre – Fighting
Price - $0.99
Rating – 4.4/5
