NBA JAM by EA SPORTS - App Review
Is it still fun today?
NBA JAM is a 2 on 2 basketball game, which is all about high flying dunks, and getting “on fire”, which is accomplished by having the same player make 3 consecutive baskets. Doing so gives the player new moves and a boost in abilities.
3 buttons on the right side of the screen control all the action, functioning as shoot, pass, block, steal, etc. options, depending on whether you have the ball or not. On the left side is your virtual analog stick, and the whole thing works very well, allowing you to pull off moves without any worries.
In addition to the standard game mode, which allows you to unlock achievements and legendary players, there’s also a multiplayer mode that lets you play online against other players for a truly enjoyable challenge. The game has great flow on both offense and defense, and online games between two skilled players tend to be exciting affairs with back and forth action and great plays all over the court.
What’s with the giant heads?
I have to say, the big headed look is…kind of eerie. It’s very cool on the one hand that you can actually recognize the faces of current NBA stars like Kobe Bryant, and old legends of the court like Karl Malone, while running up and down the virtual court.
But the way those giant heads perch precariously on their little digitized bodies, and stare at you with those frozen looks even when their body is facing the other way, is also a bit strange, and never quite looked right to me.
Other than that, the game looks great, with colorful, detailed graphics, including sidelines filled with bench players and coaches, stands filled with people, cheerleaders, and working scoreboards on the sideboards, all of which immerses you in the action. The sound is also dead on with the original, with sound effects that pump you up.
Sports game fans shouldn’t hesitate at the chance to add this to their iPhone gaming collection for just $1. It’s a classic game that plays great on the iPhone and is just as fun today as it was back then.
Platform – iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad (iOS 3.0 or later).
Genre – Sports
Price - $0.99
RATING – 4.8/5
