Cars 2 - App Review

Cars 2 is a new racing game based on the Pixar movie of the same name, starring (wait for it…) a bunch of cars. Naturally it’s a racing game (you weren’t expecting a fighting game were you, though that could prove somewhat interesting), and a pretty decent little one at that.
Cars 2 is not your typical racing game. The first thing you’ll notice about it is the side-scrolling view the game is delivered in. This is quite unlike most racing games and a nice change of pace, reminding me of another fun side-scrolling racer, Monster Racers for the Nintendo DS. You’re also not actually racing against anyone, but rather the clock.

Racing the clock? Where’s the challenge in that?

Like a lot of racing games on the iPhone, the acceleration is handled for you, which leaves you with just one major task to accomplish, which is to jump over the various obstacles strewn about the levels. Hitting these obstacles will damage your poor car, which will explode if enough things are hit. If that wasn’t bad enough, there are also bottomless pits to contend with in classic platform game style. Not fun.

Your main weapon against these vile obstacles is your jump, and not only can you jump once, you can actually jump twice. Perfecting the double jump so you’re jumping at the apex of your first jump is the key to overcoming a lot of obstacles and mastering the game. There are 3 main locales with multiple levels strewn across them.

The levels are given further replay value by including multiple levels or paths that can be traversed, and some of them are filled with more goodies or pitfalls than others. Recognizing which paths are the best to take on subsequent playthroughs will make it much easier to collect the 3 star rewards available on each level by collecting the various items scattered around the track. These also serve to give you a speed boost.

Does it look like a Honda or a Ferrari?

Cars 2 looks quite impressive, with nicely detailed cars and levels, and attractive backgrounds, though the backgrounds look a little blurry to give them that far off look. The controls are as simple as they could possibly be, just tap the screen to jump and…tap it again to jump again. Being that jumping is the star of the game and main challenge, it was made to feel somewhat imprecise and floaty, so it may take some practice to get used to the timing, but once you do you’ll be good to go (fast).

Cars 2 is a nice game for the movie lover or fan of side-scrolling gaming. It looks nice, plays well, and has just enough replay value and incentives to keep you coming back for more. Give it a try.
