Call of Duty: World at War – Zombies
An FPS on the iPhone? Get out!
No really! FPS’s are the current king of gaming in the English speaking world, but perhaps the most unlikely genre to make the transition to the iPhone screen, due to the difficulty in viewing and playing a game like this on the iPhone. One look at the graphics though should tell you that the iPhone can handle the genre and then some.
The fully 3-D levels are large and expertly designed, with neat little touches strewn about. The zombies look just as good (well bad, but in a good way), with perfect facial expressions and shambling animations. Best of all, the game doesn’t experience a hitch in performance when hordes of said shambling undead infect your screen (in which case you should probably start shooting…like right now!).
You have a nice collection of weapons and even traps at your disposal, and half the fun is trying out new toys and dispatching of the undead in new and ever more brutal ways. You can even upgrade your weapons to be even more deadly with the new pack-a-punch machines.
But weaponry alone will not be enough to take down the vile zombie hordes, you’ll need friends to help you on this perilous quest, and friends you shall have aplenty, for you can play online with up to 3 other players, and the game is not lacking for players. You’ll need every ounce of your team’s firepower and teamwork to emerge victorious.
Aren’t the controls the real horror in iPhone FPS’s?
Controls are a challenge to properly implement and make intuitive in a game such as this without the benefit of a mouse or gamepad. You have a virtual joystick that moves you around, and can change your view by swiping the screen on the right side, using the accelerometer, or a second virtual joystick. The setups all take time to master, though FPS veterans should be able to get a handle on it sooner than others.
Call of Duty is not your typical iPhone game, so gamers used to the simple pace, controls, and gameplay of most iPhone offerings may be in for a rude awakening if they’re expecting more of the same from this behemoth.
This is about as modern a gaming offering as you can find on the iPhone. But don’t let that (or the zombies) scare you off, as it’s a fantastic experience that should be savored by any fan of gaming.
Platform – iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad (iOS 3.0 or later).
Genre – Shooter
Price - $4.99
RATING – 5/5
