Bejeweled 2 - Apps Review
What do I have to do?
Bejeweled 2 is quite simple on the surface. You’re presented with an 8X8 grid on the screen, which is populated by numerous shaped and colored jewels. Your mission (if you choose to accept it, and if you’ve purchased the game I suggest you do, otherwise you’ll be wasting $1) is to align these jewels into rows or columns of 3-5 of the same jewels in a row.
You accomplish this by swapping the jewels around on the screen. You can choose any jewel and swap it with a jewel beside it, so long as that swap sets up a match. If it doesn’t the pieces will return to their original positions and you’ll be forced to try again, not with less time remaining on your timer (hurry!).
When a match is made, those jewels are removed from the board, and the jewels above them fall down to fill their place, with new jewels coming in at the very top from above the board. It’s especially fun when these cascading jewels set off giant chain reactions of matches that pile up the points and make your job easier.
Do I have any tricks up my sleeve?
There’s some additional strategy involved in the game, as matching up 4 or 5 pieces in a row creates a power-up. 4 in a row creates a power gem, which will explode once it’s involved in a match, wiping out all of the jewels around it, and setting up a possibly cascade and chain reaction. 5 in a row gives you a hyper cube. Match this beauty up, and all of the colors on the screen the same as the jewel you swapped it with will be removed.
There are 2 different modes available, one timed, the other not. The only other difference between the modes is that you can run out of matches and reach the end of the line in a non-timed match, while timed matches will automatically refill the screen if there are no matches available, so your only worry is to match them up as quickly as possible.
The graphics are relatively simple, and the backgrounds aren’t overly inspiring, but the colorful, glinting jewels are sharp enough to keep your interest. The controls are as simple as can be, and anyone can pick it up and play it without difficulty.
If you’re hankering for some relatively stress-free strategic gaming, this is undoubtedly the perfect choice, at the right price.
Platform – iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad (iOS 3.0 or later).
Genre – Puzzle
Price - $0.99
RATING – 4.6/5
