Dirt 3 – Review

Dirt 3, the third instalment of the hybrid arcade/simulation racing game is a superbly put together sequel that succeeds its predecessors by leaps and bounds.
Dirt 3 remains one the few arcade simulation racing hybrids that distributes the arcade/sim elements effectively.  This is probably my favourite racing game, I loved the original Dirt, I loved Dirt 2 and Dirt 3 reaffirms my love for this racing franchise and exceeds the high expectations I had for it in every way.  Everything about this game is just spectacular, the car animations are top notch, the car damage animations are so realistic they make you just want to smash into cars the entire game, the maps are intricately designed and detailed, the game is solid.  One of the best aspects of this game is the gameplay and the controls, this game is a pick up and play type of game, there’ s two controls you need to familiarize yourself with, accelerate and turn, this is how a racing game should be.  It’s not overly complicated or realistic to the point where the game becomes redundant like many of the racing simulations out there, the developers managed yet again to put forth a game that’s sufficiently realistic without impeaching upon the overall fun of the game.

One of the things I love about Dirt 3 is the audio is so realistic and really effectively communicates the kind of weather conditions you are driving in.  When driving in the snow the sound of your tires crunching as you drive is so realistic.  You'll encounter every kind of terrain as you progress through this game and each type of terrain is so realistically communicated by both the audio and visuals, which by the way are very intricately designed, everything is perfectly implemented, from the fans in the stadium right down to the leaves falling off trees.  Furthermore Dirt 3 is complete with tons of circuits and environments which help make the game almost infinitely replayable.
Dirt 3 boasts an immersive and stimulating single player experience, but its multiplayer experience is also very well translated relying more on arcade elements to make the multiplayer experience fun but still consistent with its realistic mechanisms.  Dirt 3’s Multiplayer experience is complete with a variety of game modes and options, but it’s ultimately three innovative game modes that really put Dirt 3 in a league of its own, outbreak, transporter and invasion.  Outbreak is this cool mode where one of the eight players (online) is an infected car, much like a Zombie (similar to the Zombie mod in just about every FPS game now) and has to smash into the other players vehicle’s thus spreading the infection to them and adding one more Zombie car to the field.  Invasion is another cool mod that places cardboard cut outs of skyscrapers and evil robots.  Drivers have to run over as many evil robots as possible while avoiding the skyscrapers.  Transporter is kind of like an FPS game with cars.

Dirt 3 is overall an excellent racing game, the only real flaw I can think of is the loading times, which is forgivable as soon as you are presented with what it was loading.  Any complaints I have with Dirt 3 are miniscule and likely wouldn’t bother the average gamer, they didn’t particularly bother me.  This game is definitely worth a purchase, not only does the game look incredible, but it is packed with hours of gameplay and some significant multiplayer innovations that are unique to Dirt 3.  There is simply no other racing game out there that has the amount of content, refinement, and fun that Dirt 3 has.
