Angry Birds Rio- Review

Those Angry Birds are back for more mayhem in feathery mayhem in Angry Birds Rio. It’s no surprise that after the wild success of the first Angry Birds, sequels would follow shortly after. So is this game just a cash grab, or does it deliver the goods and live up to the name? Read on to find out.
Why Rio?

This third iteration of the Angry Birds series is based on the hit movie Rio, which has grossed nearly half a billion dollars this year. The Angry Birds end up in Rio de Janeiro, and have to help rescue their friends (I guess they’re not so angry that they can’t make a few of those) Blu and Jewel, the stars of said movie.

Believe it or not, the game actually has the semblance of a storyline now as a result, and the game ties in beautifully with the film.

Is it different enough to hold my attention?

I don’t know whether it’s the movie tie-in or what, but Rovio Mobile really stepped their game up with this version of Angry Birds. The graphics are really impressive, most notably the backgrounds, which are bright and lavishly detailed. The game also utilizes parallax scrolling, which really gives it an immersive look and depth to it.

New twists and gameplay features abound, including new boss fights against menacing beasts, and far more collectible goodies to be found, which is a big draw for many gamers. You also have the golden eggs to be found on each level like the previous versions, which will take plenty of retries as you search for the perfect weak spot in the level to decimate it with but a single angry bird.

Must I fight yet more pigs?

No longer will you be forced to kill tasty piglets. Instead you’ll be attacking cages to free your fellow birds, and then taking on dastardly monkeys. The levels themselves are designed with some puzzles that will feel familiar and others that will feel wholly new. Rovio is also future content updates in addition to the ones that have already come out since the game’s release.

When you take a game with the popularity of Angry Birds, add a super popular movie licence to it, and then spice the game itself up with better graphics and more things to do and find, you have an undeniable recipe for success. It’s not really much of a surprise then that this game sold copies like it was going out of style when it first released; which it doesn’t seem about to do any time soon.
