Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Review

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a first-person shooter developed by Infinity Ward.  This is the first Call of Duty game to not take place during world War 2 or World War I.  Obviously with the franchises change of direction, a variety of new modern weapons, vehicles, character models and technologies are featured for the first time in the Call of Duty franchise. Some examples include a grenade Launcher, Target Pointer, the portable anti-tank guided missile and many more.  Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare introduces a number of new game play styles to the single player campaign as well as a variety of cameo-style missions where you play as different kinds of soldiers such as a Gunship gunner or as part of a Sniping Team behind enemy lines in a flashback-style mission.
Call of Duty 4 is arguably the best looking Military based shooter out there, the visuals immediately stood out to me as being very realistic, the character models are well done, the facial expressions are dead on, the environments are intricately designed and well implemented.  Call of Duty is probably the best looking game of the three Military FPS franchises.

The gameplay and mechanics are similar to previous Call of Duty games, the controls are straight forwards and make the game easy for players to get into.  There was also a number of new game modes, as well as greater single player variety in terms of the missions as well which I was pleasantly surprised to see.

Call of Duty has made an attempt to create a more balanced single player game as opposed to the constant shoot, shoot, shoot single player game that was previous Call of Duty games.  It still has its gripping fire fights but it’s now laced with a slower paced cinematic storyline to make for a much more evenly spread single player campaign.

Like previous Call of Duty games, the sound quality is superb, very realistic and very well done.  Everything from the firing of guns to the dropping of bombs, to the rustling of leaves sounds realistic.  If you end up in a close combat situation, the firing of guns was noticeably louder than a bullet fired from a distance. Even the voice acting is well done.  The online experience is fully functional and very well done however it’s not the best designed multiplayer game out there.  Everything in Modern warfare feels previous COD game but with minor improvements made to level design and the addition of new modes.

They took out voice chat in this game, so the teamwork dynamic and to by blunt  an element of fun has been removed from the game, I’m not sure why they took this out, I can only guess they found it to be distracting for players.  Also there is no custom match anymore to aid you when search for a game to join, all you can do is pick by region and set up private games.  COD seemed to reduce the amount of options player had concerning Online match ups which I found a bit strange, is certainly not the best military FPS game on the market right now, certainly not for online play, but the Online experience is satisfactory.

COD brings up that whole graphics vs. gameplay dispute.  COD is no doubt one of the best looking and best sounding military shooters currently on the market, it also delivers one of the most immersive single player experiences out of any of the Military FPS games.  However its multiplayer game unfortunately lacks and this is why I can’t fully recommend COD.

If you’re looking for a great single player campaign this game is worth picking up however if that intense Online experience is what you’re looking for I would pass on this one and get Battlefield 2 instead.
