Borderlands Review

Borderlands is a science fiction based first-person shooter with RPG elements, developed by Gearbox Software.  The first thing that came to mind upon starting this game was Fallout 3, but only because they both take place on a post-apocalyptic planet.  But after playing the game a lot more it became clear that this was a completely different game.  The game does manage to confidently combine the FPS and RPG genres to create an interesting experience.  You can play as four unique characters, a soldier, a super strong berserker, a sniper, and a siren.  The game has a very MMORPG feel and puts the player in an open environment, much like Marrowind or World Of Warcraft.
While at first I viewed the game as an underling of Fallout 3 simply because of the post apocalyptic, desolate environment, as soon as I started playing any notion that this game was trying to be Fallout 3 quickly dissipated.  The game is original and distinguished enough for me to firmly state that this game is anything but another Fallout game.

It is packed with enough fresh new concepts and innovations that impelled me to no longer see it in Fallout’s overbearing shadow.  In this game you can actually just ride around in a car and shoot people, you can also do quests of course, and there are main quests.

Another distinguishing aspect of this game is the ability to play the entire game in a 4-player co-op mode.  You can make a day out of it with a few friends and see how far you can get, but don`t think you can beat it just like that, this game took me roughly thirty to forty hours to complete as one would expect from an RPG type of game.  This game is packed with content, hundreds on guns, shields, locations, enemies, everything.  This game has a lot of depth and guarantees hours and hours of play-time.  The game looks good too.

The graphics are a lot more cartoony than its Fallout counterpart but this is what distinguishes it from most post apocalyptic games, it’s light, and not overly solemn about the whole end of the world situation.

The environments are well designed, the character animations are interesting.  But the game doesn`t take itself too seriously which I thought was refreshing, the animations are somewhat cartoonish, but they appropriately set the mood of the game and really distinguish it from other post apocalyptic games most notably Fallout which has a much more solemn approach to the end of the civilized world.  This game has almost a happy go lucky feel to it.

Borderlands is a great game, although initially I couldn`t help but think Fallout upon gazing at the empty post apocalyptic wasteland, the game quickly asserted itself as a different game than Fallout 3.  For one it is far less serious and a lot lighter, you don`t feel like you have to invest yourself in the game or take it too seriously, the graphics are appropriately quirky and cartoony which help make it almost humorous.

Borderlands is also much more fast paced and action orientated than Fallout 3, not to mention its co-operative play really sets it apart.  Aside from the fact that both Fallout 3 and Borderlands are set in a Post apocalyptic environment they are essentially two radically different games.  Borderlands is an exceptional addition to the post apocalyptic niche with a number of excellent twists and unprecedented approaches to the genre.

Almost infinitely replayable Borderlands is a top tier game that is more than worth the money.
