Bioshock 2 Review

Bioshock 2 was accompanied by a crap load of hype and justifiably so, after all this was the great follow up to the revolutionary Bioshock.  Bioshock 2 absolutely kills it.  Perhaps the hardest part about this review will be figuring out exactly what it is I liked most about this game.  What always gripped me with the Bioshock series was the subtle creepiness that accompanied it, it kind of reminds of the movie the shining, nothing really happens in the movie that`s particularly scary (until the end) but the desolate atmosphere and feeling of isolation creates a tone that puts you on the edge of your seat.
Nothing has to happen in Bioshock in order for it to be scary, it just is......the environment, the sounds, the awareness that you are trapped underneath an ocean in this mysteriously abandoned phenomenon, all the colors on the pallet blend together nicely to make a deliciously creepy and enticing game.

The storyline is intelligently written, the gameplay and the mechanics are extremely intricate and well designed, the game even delved into deep moral and philosophical concepts that one would not normally expect from a video game.  Most of the story is told through tape recordings which you come across as you progress throughout the game, which you can than play and piece together to figure out what happened to the Rapture.

In Bioshock 2 you start off on an airplane where you are than introduced to a man named Jack.  Suddenly you find yourself controlling Jack and swimming to a lighthouse to board a submarine that takes you to an underwater city called Rapture.  Upon arriving at the marvellous city of Rapture you quickly conclude that something is not right in the underground city, it appears to have been completely abandoned....yea it’s creepy.

The game is very well orchestrated; everything from the graphics to the sound is spot on.  The environments are very intricate and meticulously detailed.  Like its predecessor it still uses the Unreal Engine, the developers stretched out what they could to try and make Rapture look as beautiful as possible and it looks absolutely stunning.  I was sincerely blown away by the water effects; they’re the most realistic water effects I have yet to see.  You can jump into the water, jump out, and the water will still be running down your screen.

The minimalistic approach to the sounds helps add to the games isolated and foreboding feel.  The music is spot on in this game, playing music from the late 1950s, the period in which the city was last occupied.  This gives you a sense of what the times were like but more importantly gave me the sense that this place was still occupied, that the place itself was alive, this game would not be as creepy if it had any other type of music.

Sound effects are all fairly the same as regular games so there are no problems there.  The mechanics of the game are spot on, it feels like your typical FPS game, but later in the game you can obtain powers and new ways to dispose of your enemies.

One aspect of the game which I liked a lot was the mini game in which you must turn the water tubes accordingly so that the fluid can travel from one end of the pip to the other, this game is used to activate machines, which help you progress throughout the game by providing you with items, by aiding you in defence against enemies etc.

The one major flaw which I felt somewhat detrimental to the overall difficulty of the game was that if you die you’ll respawn right back at the checkpoint and everything is exactly as it was at the time of your death, nothing changes, all the monsters will still be in the same place, and they will have less health, meaning you can exploit this flaw and plan for next time because you know what to expect.

Despite Bioshock2’s minor flaws here and there, this game still stands out as one of the best games currently out there for PS3.  I absolutely loved this game and would recommend it to anyone looking for a game to really get invested in, or anyone who loves creepy, mysterious games with an enigmatic story line.  Thumbs way up.
