iPhone 101: What are Apps?

What are apps? If you are not a very techie person, then you are likely to ask this question, especially if you have just bought an iPhone and are being asked about the apps that you would like to get for your gadget. To be strict about it, app is simply a short-cut of the word “application,” which is the term used to refer to any computer software. This means that the term “app” can actually be used for any computer software, regardless of whether it is on an iPhone or not.
For example, Word is considered as one of the desktop applications because it typically runs from your computer’s desktop.

Outlook Express, Skype, and Calculator are other examples of desktop applications.

There are also programs known as web applications, and these are the ones that run from computers known as Internet hosts.

One example of a web application is Google Docs. So, the next time you are asked, “What are apps?” you’ll know what to say.

Needless to say, apps have been around long before the arrival of the iPhone on the market.

But they were previously referred to as applications or simply software.

And even then people were already able to use these computer programs on their mobile phones.

Have you ever noticed the currency converter, the notepads, games and all other features of your phone?

Those are actually apps; only they’re not iPhone apps. It was only with the advent of the iPhone that the term “apps” entered the picture, became popular among the techie crowd, and confused the general public.

Well, now you don’t have to live with the confusion. What are apps? They’re simply applications.
