Tetris - App Review
Just what is the gameplay?
At its core, Tetris is a deceptively simple puzzle game. Your goal is to create lines from 4 differently shaped falling pieces. These pieces can be moved around on the playing around as they fall, and also have their shape changed, save for the square, which, well, is always a square, no matter what you do to it.
By creating lines you remove them from play, and the object is to continue to create lines and move up in levels while avoiding the screen filling up with blocks. The action at first starts out slow, and the game may seem simple as a result.
You have plenty of time to decide where to put your piece, and you can also see which piece is next in the queue, so you can plan for that piece as well. But as you remove lines and advance levels, the speed picks up, the action intensifies, and the game becomes quite the thrill.
I want the gameplay spiced up a bit!
This version of Tetris adds some new features to the gameplay in the form of an objective based mode that requires you to complete specific tasks.
You’re also given new abilities, such as the ability to store pieces, the ability to pop existing pieces like bubble wrap with the touch of a finger, and the ability to draw the next shape you want to use. You’ll need every one of these newfound powers to get you through the most difficult levels and challenges.
Controlling the blocks is simple, you tap the edges to make the piece flip, or move it around within the playing field in its current shape by dragging it. You can also speed up how quickly the piece drops by flicking downwards.
The controls do tend to get trickier as the levels progress and the speed picks up, as you must really master the art of being ready to move those blocks the second they come onscreen.
How good can a bunch of shapes really look?
Graphics-wise, this is one of the most appealing versions of Tetris yet, with colorful graphics and some nice added special effects from the new abilities. The music is just catchy enough to not become grating, though you’ll quickly forget it after the game’s been turned off.
Tetris is the perfect game on the go, and it comes with an unbeatable price on the iPhone compared to its versions on other consoles.
Coupled with the added modes, it really makes it a no-brainer purchase for newbies and veterans alike; which is good, cause you’ll need that saved brain power for actually playing the game.
Platform – iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad (iOS 3.0 or later).
Genre – Puzzle
Price - $2.99
Rating – 4.6/5
