Doom 3 – Review

Doom 3 is the first fully 3D instalment of the Doom Franchise from ID software, if you don’t know who ID software is.  If you’re not familiar with the Doom franchise, you must not be a gamer.  ID software is the company known for creating the FPS genre with none other than Doom, yes this games predecessor.  This is the sequel to the game that ultimately set the standard for all FPS games from the mid 90’s onwards.  Doom 3 is a survival horror game that takes place on a Martian base on Mars where a portal to hell has seemingly opened up and overrun the base.
Let me start by stating the visuals of this game are what distinguish it from every other FPS game out there, truly remarkable.  The environments are sufficiently dark and creepy and definitely left me with that feeling of isolation, there was never question as to whether or not I was alone in the darkest corners of space, I was.  This is a scary game.

What I like most about this game is ID stuck to the formula, they didn’t try to force too much into the game to the point where it would begin to feel bloated like many long standing franchises have attempted to do when debuting on next generation consoles.

The game has stuck to the classic formula.  It’s not a tactical, it doesn’t expect you to do complicated missions, the game is simple, aim, shoot, kill, proceed.  It feels very much like the original doom except with superior graphics.  The game is complete with 15-20 hours of continuous missions as well as a co-op mode in which you and a friend can quiver your way through this possessed space station together.

Although I only played this game on normal difficulty I did find the game to be a little bit easy, and it does tend to get a little bit repetitive after the two hour mark.  The enemies aren’t particularly varied, they’re also painfully predictable.  One of the immediate things I noticed which bothered me right from the get go was my characters apparent inability to equip a weapon and use a flashlight at the same time!

In a game of this scope and magnitude, not to mention in this era of gaming, I found this minor annoyance to be quite magnified given the polished and refurbished look of everything else in Doom 3.

The bottom line is aside from the improved graphics Doom 3 feels and plays like an FPS game from the mid 90’s, it’s simple, straight to the point and an easy pick up and play game like the original Doom was, but that’s all that I want from Doom, if I wanted to play Gears of War 2 or Left 4 Dead 2 I would go play those games.

While its noticeably behind games like Halo 2 and Battlefield 2 in terms of the availability of options, mechanics and lack of features and replay value in the multiplayer department, if you’re a Doom fan just looking to get back into the Doom world or just looking for a scary game to play, this is certainly worth your time and money.  Doom 3 deliver the classic Doom experience that Doom fans will love with orgasmic graphics that will blow you away.
