MapleStory Cygnus Knights Edition App Review

MapleStory Cygnus Knights Edition is a spin-off of the hugely popular MMORPG MapleStory, and retains many of the elements that have made it so popular, minus the whole massively multiplayer thing.
Why is this MapleStory so popular in the first place?

Unlike most MMORPG’s, which function with a sort of quasi-automated battle system that simply requires you to click a monster and sit back and watch the bloody carnage unfold (save for using the occasional skill), MapleStory is much more intense and action-oriented.

The game is played on 2D screens and the action is carried out in real time. You have to actually move up to the monster and attack them manually. Likewise, you can also manually dodge their attacks if you’re good enough.

This makes the combat far more satisfying than most MMORPG’s, and this iPhone has this same combat system. Platforming elements also abound, and most screens have multiple levels that can jumped to.

Are there still RPG elements?

Also like the MMORPG, Cygnus Knights Edition contains many of the other traits that its sibling does. You’ll be travelling across the world, completing quests for villagers and random people you come across, and swimming in the rewards they offer you.

Most of these quests boil down to fetch quests or monster killing quests, which could get redundant, but the simplicity and fun of the combat engine keeps them from growing too tiring.

You’ll also equip yourself with items and grow stronger as you level up through defeating monsters and completing quests. That drive to continually improve your character is very addicting, and can fuel long hack and slash gaming sessions.

And there’s a lot of gaming to be had. For the meagre $0.99 price, you get an absolute load of content, with the ability to complete dozens of quests and level all the way up to 120, just like the MMORPG. There may be more content in this little gem than any other game on the iPhone.

How does it look and control?

MapleStory has a cute 2D graphical look, with well animated characters and monsters. The monsters are so cute in fact you’ll almost feel bad whacking them with your sword or snuffing them out with your spells. Almost.

The game is easily controlled with touch screen controls. You have a virtual pad on the left side of the screen to control your movement, your jump and attack buttons on the right side of the screen, and a set of hotkeys above them that can be customized from your arsenal of spells and items.

If you can’t get enough MapleStory, this is a brilliant package to take with you on the road for a mere $0.99. And if you haven’t yet experienced the thrill of its 2D platforming combat action well, what are you waiting for?
