The Amazing Breaker (iPhone)

In today’s age of gorgeous graphics and games that run on Blu-Ray discs with almost limitless data, it may seem surprising that a game that offers little in the way of graphics and audio can be as addictive as The Amazing Breaker (TAB) available on your iPhone and iPad. Even though the game is not necessarily different from many of the other games that you can find App Store (think Castle Clout, Angry Birds, or anything else that works like a giant slingshot), it is different enough and makes enough changes to the general concept of those games. This makes it a game that gamers should not dismiss. Especially for the low price that the game is available for.
The goal of the game

Unlike some of the other games previously mentioned, TAB does not revolve around trying to remove as many adversaries as possible, but the demolition of beautifully sculpted ice structures.

To succeed in the destruction of these ice structures, the player gets a number of different bombs and a slingshot to launch them with.

A different way of holding your iPhone

Unlike most of the other destruction games in which the player holds the iPhone on its side, with TAB the iPhone has to be positioned vertically. This leads to a much more natural feel and makes it far easier to play the game with one hand.

This makes it much easier to aim the bombs towards the ice – crucial if you want to make the most of the game.

The gameplay

At the start of each level, the player is presented with a limited number of bombs that they can use. There are different colored bombs, each bomb has a different attribute. The following bombs are available:

  • The red bomb: the most basic bomb – it simply sticks to the ice and explodes
  • The green bomb: this bomb splits into three smaller bombs that do not detonate until hit by another bomb
  • The blue bomb: these bombs go through the ice, meaning you can hit those hard to reach areas
  • The purple bomb: these bombs drop three bombs with the tap of a finger

In certain levels, it is possible to receive more bombs by detonating another bomb right next to it.  When thinking of a strategy to destroy all the ice, it is important to remember that detonations can be linked together as long as the bombs are within close proximity of one another.

The goal

In each level, it is important to destroy at least 90 percent of the ice sculpture on the screen, otherwise the user fails the level and has to start over.

Ultimately, players find themselves playing through stages that they already cleared with the bare minimum, just to see if they can destroy all of the ice – the game is simply that addictive.

A steal

Especially at the introductory price, the game is an absolute steal. With the promise of more levels to come soon, players will be putting several hours into playing the game before they have completed all 80 levels.

Though the game is quite familiar, it never feels like it was rehashed. It is the type of game that players will spend hours on, even if it just means getting that one missing percentage.
