Prototype Review
Prototype’s story is told in flashback, similar to Infamous 2 you begin the game with all your powers fully intact, you character is at his peak of power. By time you’ve completed the tutorial the game shifts from day 18, the day of New York’s final outbreak where you escape from the facility and begin finding out where you fit into the mayhem, to day one. Although Infamous introduced this concept first, Prototype contains enough new innovations and concepts to effectively distinguish it from Infamous and furthermore contains much more intense action than is in Infamous. Your powers are pretty impressive. It’s difficult to say what character is more fun, because both Infamous and Prototype are very fun. I will say however that travelling in Prototype is much more exhilarating than in Infamous where you slide across telephone wires. In infamous you can run up and down buildings, leap from one building to another, jump up buildings - it’s like being Spiderman only a thousand times better. I will say the climbing mechanics are similar to Assassins Creed and are without a shred of doubt in my opinion for faster and more exciting that the slower scaling mechanics featured in Infamous. You can absorb people in the streets, gather their memories, become them, you have numerous weapons, blades, you can air jack helicopters and tanks. You’re basically a weapon, a weaponized virus only a few seconds short of being immortal. Unfortunately you’re not a immortal and because your power is so incredible, you are no secret to the government, in fact the government is well aware of you and is constantly hunting you down. The music that accompanies the government is appropriately ominous and foreboding, it fits with the sequences perfectly as the military locks onto your position and orders a missile strike. Of course at this point the pressures on you to get the hell out of there as quickly as possible.
Prototype however isn’t without its flaws. I did have a few issues with locking onto things, the button that targets enemies is oddly enough the same button that controls the camera, I was extremely frustrated by this mechanic, it messed me up more than a few times. Because there’s always so much going on this game and there’s a ton of scenery for the hardware to process, the textures aren’t always fantastic and occasionally some of the textures lag if you’re moving quickly across the city, you’ll notice some textures are smudgy and off, but this minor hardware issue doesn’t take away from the overall atmosphere of the game which is very impressive and highly immersive. The side missions although interesting tend to feel frivolous and there for it’s easy to overlook them, but the main game is nevertheless an absolute blast and will give you about ten hours of exhilarating excitement.
Rating: 92% “This might even be better than Infamous.”
Pros:
Scaling the city is like riding a rollercoaster in this game, so fun.
The graphics are really good despite some laggy textures
Awesome combat mechanics and really cool powers
Cons:
Some laggy textures
