Dragonball Z Burst Limit Review

“Dragons Ball Z, if you’ve ever been a child before, you probably know about Dragon Ball Z.  You know the show the starts with some talking, followed by some grunting, followed by two minutes of fighting and then another half hour of talking and grunting......Yea that show.” Dragon Ball Z....I used to be a fan of the DragonBall Z show, not too long ago, I remember the half an hour episodes that consisted of talking, grunting, staring, everything but what I was waiting in anticipation to see.
Then at last, just when one of the fighters attacks (by the end of the episode), the episode would either cut to commercial or end.  But I also remember thinking, wow this would make a great Nintendo 64 game, it was practically designed for it, it has the RPG elements of increasing your level, the action elements, I remember thinking if they ever made a Dragon Ball Z game it would amazing.  Well they have since made a handful of Dragon Ball Z games, they weren’t exactly what I had in mind, I was thinking more of an RPG/adventure game rather than a straight side scrolling fighting game, but heck it’s DBZ.  If you’re a fan of Dragon Ball Z you’re probably going to want this game.
Burst Limit follows the DBZ show, it starts from the very beginning and ends at Sal, you’ll partake in all the important fights in between, so essentially it’s like a rerun of the show instead you are in it.  When the villain wins a fight you will get to play as the villain.  The cut scenes are adapted faithfully to the show and are probably the most intriguing aspect of the story mode.  They are very entertaining and almost nostalgic to watch, but eventually it can become rather irritating after you’ve been in about five fights because you can’t skip the cinematic sequences, you have to watch the whole thing.  Eventually these cinematic sequences become a bathroom break or a time where you go get a snack, you’ll wish the story was shorter.  The graphics are really great in this game, the visuals are scintillatingly beautiful to look at, the attacks themselves however are a bit bland and some of the power aura’s around certain character such as piccolo are the wrong colors, so it does feel a bit different form the show.  Nevertheless this is without a doubt the best looking DBZ game around, the sounds, the effects are all tried tested and true from the show, it also contains the same music as the show.
The cool thing about this game is you can pick your mode, your fight and even your partner, but it’s not a tag team, your partner will come into play at certain points throughout the game or help you when it’s needed.  You can also select your stats and customize your characters as you progress which add an intricate RPG element what is otherwise a genre of a game that is notoriously susceptible to redundancy.  Not only is the menu system for the multiplayer aspect of the game atrocious, the multiplayer experience itself is unfortunately critically flawed.  In this instance there’s one protruding flaw that pretty much ruins the multiplayer experience and any hope of an enduring online community or any online community for that matter.  People can quit the game when they are losing the fight so the fight is recorded as it never happened.  Hopefully the developers will address this fatal flaw with a patch in the near future.
The gameplay is decent, it’s not the best.  The graphics are rendered in a 2D animation as opposed to 3D which works well given the game is basically a cartoon.  You’re given a myriad of attacks to work with, however one of the problems with this game is it’s easy to spam attacks over and over again and doesn’t punish the player for doing this, so vs. other players you may find it a bit frustrating that a player can literally just press the same button over and over and again and succeed against you for doing so.  Despite some of these flaws Dragon Balls Z is still a good game.
Rating: 70% - “If you’re a huge DBZ fan you will enjoy this game.”
Pros:
Follows the story of the actual show from the beginning up to Sal
Lots of attack combinations
The game looks really great, although it does get a few of the power up colors aura’s wrong on some of the characters.
Cons:
The cut scenes start to feel very long after just a few fights
Online play is critically flawed given a player can quit the game if he is losing and the match up will be recorded as if it never happened, that is not recorded at all
The game doesn’t punish button mashing, rather it’s possible for a player to cheese you with one button
