Conan Review

“Conan, like the movie unfortunately played right into my expectations, by this I mean it sucked.” Conan despite coming with a lot of publicity slipped under radar, not surprisingly, if we’ve learned anything from history it’s that games based on movies generally aren’t good, and games based on bad movies are more often than not even worse.  Basically the story starts off with Conan desecrating a shrine and awaking an ancient evil.  Conan must get rid of the evil in order to save Earth, but more importantly to Conan being the arrogant self-centered barbarian that he is, he wishes to gang back his lost army.
The combat style and gameplay is fairly cliché and is nothing new, it’s the same Lord of the Rings style linear level design combined with wave after wave of mindless minions that are ultimately easy to dispose of followed by your basic run of the mill boss.  Nothing innovative in this game, you basically just use two buttons, one for strong attack and one for light attack, anything else is just unnecessary and whatever else there is the game doesn’t provide you any incentive to use.  Despite being a pretty simple the game still manages to be at least a little bit enjoyable.
When it comes to boss battles, it’s mostly about pattern recognition, knowing when to attack the boss, what moves to use and how to avoid the boss’s attack when you’re not attacking him.  There are some cinematic special moves which are cool but they don’t really add much of a dynamic to game play or save it from redundancy.  Interwoven into all this mindless and redundant combat is the option of saving scantily clad women as you might expect to find in a Conan games, you’ll run into these instances at certain points throughout the game.  For a pretty cookie cutter game the weapon styles are actually quite diverse, you can pick up weapons that drop along the way and equip them or just stick with the weapon you started with.
While this game provides some mindless hack and slash fun, it’s certainly not worth purchasing, if anything I would borrow it from a friend or give a rental.
Rating: 65% - “Nothing special but it can be fun.”
Pros:
Scantily clad women frequently appear that you can rescue
Some pretty fun basic hack and slash
Cons:
Very stale and cliché, nothing new...at all
You will quickly become tired of the two button hack and slash combat system
