Afro Samurai Review

“Based on the Afro Samurai show, Afro Samurai the game stays very close to the series, so close that if you already follow the series, playing this game will just be like watching the series again only you get to chop people up along the way, I am not entirely sure this is a good thing but that would be up for you to decide.”
The game looks great, the sound is really cool.  Unfortunately the boss fights fall flat, they simply don’t work and they’re not particular challenging or fun.  The game is very linear, it’s your basic run of mill kill hordes of minions while progressing through predictable and linear level based design in which there’s only ever one way to go, followed by a boss at the end of the level.  There’s nothing wrong with this type of game play if it has a diverse and compelling enough fighting mechanic to keep you immersed in the game, however Afro Samurai just doesn’t have that and it runs out of steam pretty quickly.  It’s basically a hack and slash type of game in which you a have a Samurai sword, you really only have two buttons, light attack and heavy attack, it does have a cool feature where you can slow down time and slice a character in half thus killing him in one swing which is really gory and plenty of fun.
The game starts from the first season of Afro Samurai and it features the voice acting of Samuel Jackson which is a huge plus, we all know how cool and recognizable Samuel’s voice is.  Now despite the fact that it follows the story of the show on a dime, you don’t really get the full story or an explanation for what’s going on, you just continue to cut your way through linear levels and robust minions, which becomes fairly boring fairly quickly.  While there are combos, the combos aren’t particularly impressive and you’re never really forced to learn anything new because the games easy enough that you can get from the start to finish with just two buttons.  As noticed the boss system is about as cliché as it comes and becomes merely a representation of everything that’s wrong with this game.  It doesn’t help that the camera is always frantic and never stays steady.  Your battle with the camera becomes the biggest battle of this game.
If you’re an Afro Samurai fan you’re probably going to play this game regardless, but just know that you’re probably going to get bored fairly quickly.
