USE THE TAPS, PEOPLE!

A lot of you who are reading this now have at some point, probably purchased water bottles. A large number among you may even be doing so on a day to day basis. For a fact, I know, some people tend to live on water bottles alone. Of course, all of us have right to live by our individual preferences. We are all free to express how we should live our lives- as long we hurt no one during the process, right? Today, I'll veer off from my usual musings to tell you about something that seriously worries me and others who advocate on caring for the well-being of each one of us and of course, of Mother Earth (yeah, it's really that serious).

The first hard fact that most of us are very reluctant to accept or give real importance to is what companies do best- LIE FOR PROFIT. Do you know that companies skew the truth and mislead people into buying bottled mineral water just so they can exponentially expand their earnings? It's actually part of their shrewd marketing stratagems to exhaust more profit from you.

You'd certainly be skeptical by now so here I present you the proofs. Base on the NRDC report, a minimum of 25% of all these bottled mineral water are coming straight from public sources such as taps. One prominent example is the Aquafina brand created by Pepsi-Cola. Last 2007, it was declared by NRDC as bottled purified tap water.

Here's an outrageous fact: do you know that a staggering $2.17 billion was spent by the American population in 2006 for Aquafina alone? In this same year, a total sum of $15 billion was spent by the US residents on bottled mineral water.

Such evidence clearly reveals that those bottled mineral water you're drinking are not really worth your extra money. Why buy if you can acquire the same thing at home just by using a simple filter? You can even get the same water by just drinking straight from your kitchen tap.

Of course, when you talk of something as vital as your drinking water, you cannot ignore the health risks. Do you know that in many instances bottled mineral water pose more harmful effects than beneficial ones?

This is because companies put in an immense amount of chemicals inside your bottled water. Both this plus the scientifically proven fact that these bottles can produce harmful chemicals into the water that it contains, makes it extremely unsafe for any one's health, especially for people who have weaker immune systems.

These above-mentioned NRDC tests and survey found out that 22% these bottled mineral water had contaminants that were classified as dangerous by the U.S. health limits. Here's another shocking fact: these bottles emit substances we call phthalates.

By law, levels of such components are limited in tap water. However, it's a dreadful reality that there's no such limits imposed on water bottles. Anyone of you would take my side and agree that such laxity is just not right- negligence in this matter keeps those irresponsible companies on the loose.

Then there's the worldwide pressing issue about water security. Confiscation of rights for water distribution has been happening in many countries. Why is this taking place? The truth is many large companies seize the people's rights to free-flowing water.

They do this to amass greater profits. How so? Water privatization by these greedy giant companies allow them to purchase water from the country then sell it in bottles- they sell these bottled water to the people for a hefty price tag - a price that these poor residents shouldn't be paying for in the first place.

This is not a new story for Turkey and it's a sad realization that privatization of water will continue to occur globally. In fact, as a speculation, just as we have war for oil, we may be eyeing an approaching war for water.

To keep this terrible thing from happening, all of us will have to find ways to manage our natural resources effectively and carefully. We'll have to make better and more socially conscious decisions.

In conclusion, there's truly no great difference if you compare bottled mineral water against tap water. Drinking tap water is generally the best for our health and for all of us. So the next moment you quench your thirst, don't get money from your pocket and don't even dare touch your wallet, grab a mug from your kitchen and have a good drink from the tap - you'll all of us and Mother Earth a noble deed.
