But the proliferation of categories reflects my impression of what's happening with music: the fall-out is taking an oddly long time to land. Yeah, there's no center anymore, and there probably never will be again outside of Boomerville, where the focus is on the past and reunions and whatnot. Music mutates too quickly these days for that "shared cultural identity" to mean much but there's plenty around to listen too, even if the Grammy's remain clueless. The Grammys like the Oscars and the rest, have always been terrible but everyone knows that.
