Surely, somebody other than me loves The Envoy? While that second album probably has pride of place in my Zevon collection, sometimes I just want to hear the later less polished Asylum albums. The Envoy has a couple of my favorite Zevon tunes: "Ain't That Pretty at All," "Charlie's Medicine," and a few marvelous love songs. This album was reissued on CD on the same day as Fire. Play it loud!

He never recorded a collection of songs so good or coherent from start to finish, lyrically or musically. And that includes Excitable Boy. But there are gems scattered throughout his late albums. I'll take the weird "Something Bad Happened to a Clown" and "For My Next Trick I'll Need a Volunteer," as well as the remarkable cover of "Back in the High Life Again" but "Mutineer" is the only late Zevon song that I think holds up next to the best of the self titled record.

I'd highly recommend the late Zevon stuff as well - Life'll Kill Ya, My Ride's Here and his final all-too-mortal Wind. Plenty of worthy material there.

I took the opportunity to listen to the album again this afternoon and, more impressive than the lyrics, I found the music so melodically satisfying. Perfect is not a metric I use, but damn good is.

I hit Napster-to-Go for all the post Excitable Boy stuff I could get just to see if he ever did anything so good again. A week's worth of listening at least. Thanks Jason for sparking a musical career tour of an old favorite.

My favorite song on that album is The French Inhaler...the language is a little more pedestrian, but so true an dramatic.

You said you were and actress and yes I believe you are.
I thought you'd be a star.
So I drank up all the money with these phonies in this Hollywood bar
These friend of mine in this Hollywood bar

and of course she says: "So long, Norman"

That first Asylum album is great. Perfect even. Those Hollywood boozer songs--The French Inhaler and Desperados Under the Eaves are great, but there's really no songs on the album that are less than excellent--Carmelita, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, Poor Poor Pitiful Me, Frank and Jesse James, Hasten Down the Wind, Mohammend's Radio...what a collection of great songs. A career's worth in one record. It's well recorded and beautifully played too.

I wore out a cassette of his '76 eponymous album.

I revere Zevon, as you know; named my personal blog after one of his classic lines. I saw Zevon on that tour about 10 days later, at the Capitol Theater with Mink DeVille opening up. I remember the sheer madness of Zevon of that era on stage - he left it out there, let's put it that way. I gotta get this disc.
